Principle Of Disease Resistance

Mechanism of plant disease resistance induced by chitosan: studies have found that chitosan has antifungal activity, and its derivatives such as chitosan oligosaccharides also have strong inhibitory effect.

① Chitosan and its derivatives can induce plants to produce the resistance protein pr (pathogenesis related proteins), which is resistant to pathogens;

② Lignin is the main component of the secondary cell wall of plant vascular tissue, which is resistant to microbial degradation. Studies have confirmed that chitin, chitosan and their derivatives can induce lignification around the infected site of the pathogen, forming a physical barrier, thus preventing or delaying the growth of the pathogen and spreading to the surrounding normal tissues, and enhancing the disease resistance of plants. Barber et al. (1988) treated wheat wounds with chitin oligomers. The results showed that monomers and dimers had almost no function of inducing lignin formation, while tetramers, pentamers and hexamers could obviously induce lignin formation;

③ It was found that phenols (tannin, chlorogenic acid, etc.) were accumulated in the infection sites of plant pathogens. Phenols are bactericidal substances and precursors of lignin formation, so the increase of phenols in plants can not only prevent disease itself, but also promote the lignification of pathogen infection, thus enhancing the disease resistance of plants. Ralph et al. (1992) confirmed that the phenolic composition in soybean cells induced by chitosan changed rapidly, such as phenylpropane, coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid increased significantly;

④ It can induce plants to produce callcse and enhance the cell wall of plants. As a kind of polysaccharide rich in L, 3-glucose, when plants are invaded by pathogens, it often deposits in the cells, so as to separate the infected parts from normal cells and form a physical barrier like lignification. In addition, chitosan can also change the cell wall of plants. Nielsen et al. (1994) treated tomato with chitosan. When Fusarium spp. invaded, the cell wall of tomato was significantly thickened, the intercellular space was filled, and a large number of papillae were formed at the place where Fusarium spp. invaded. The pathogen was embedded in dense granular material and could not be further spread. Moreover, there seemed to be bactericides in the granular material, which made the plant produce effective resistance to the pathogen The resistance of the plant to antibiotics.
