The in-depth study of chitosan oligosaccharide in the field of animal production shows that chitosan oligosaccharide is non-toxic, non heat source, non variation, and has special physiological activities and functions, such as regulating the metabolic activities of microorganisms in animal intestine, selectively activating and proliferating the growth of beneficial bacteria, reducing cholesterol and blood lipid content, improving immune ability and lean meat rate, etc. Chitosan oligosaccharide with high degree of polymerization can also inhibit the growth and reproduction of pathogenic bacteria, promote protein synthesis and cell activation, thus improving the production performance of livestock and poultry.

Compared with the control group, the death rate and defective rate of piglets in the 0.02% marine oligosaccharide group were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). The body weight of 14-35 day old piglets and 35-70 day old piglets were increased by 18% and 14.2%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The results showed that marine oligosaccharides had good growth promoting effect as feed additives for pigs. In 2004, chitosan oligosaccharide as a new feed additive was approved by the Ministry of agriculture.
